ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT AGENCY OF TAMIL NADU (EMAT)

The Government of Tamil Nadu has created EMAT for monitoring the works carried out under National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) and National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) and has started functioning from 22.01.2003. The Principal Secretary to Government, Environment and Forest Department is the Chairman and the Director of Environment is the Member Secretary of the Environment Management Agency of Tamil Nadu.The EMAT is implementing the National Green Corps (NGC) activities besides executing various eco-restoration activities in the State through various agencies viz., Municipal Administration and Water Supply, Public Works, Fisheries and Local Bodies etc.Environment Management Agency of Tamil Nadu (EMAT) has been created by Government of Tamil Nadu for monitoring the works carried out under National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) and National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP). Environmental awareness programme in schools are also carried out by EMAT.

FUNCTIONS

  • Liaison with National River Conservation Directorate, MoEF&CC, GoI and get funds from Government of India projects
  • Co-ordinate with Tamil Nadu Water supply and Drainage Board, Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board/Commissioner of Municipal Administration, Public Works Department NGO’s in the implementation of ongoing schemes.
  • Implementation of lake conservation programme under National Lake Conservation Projects
  • Awareness programme in school through NGC & Eco club students
